Nice day ahead of a Stormy Weekend

Today the St. Louis area will receive abundant sunshine and highs will be near 60 degrees. The next storm system will enter the region on Saturday and Sunday and give us the chance of showers and thunderstorms. There will be a pretty good chance of seeing severe weather and the SPC has the area in a slight risk for Saturday and Sunday. This may become a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) with the possibility of a severe weather outbreak including tornadoes.

When you step outside Saturday morning it is going to feel like mid-April instead of mid-March. Temps will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s by mid-morning... with dew point temperatures only lagging behind by 6 to 7 degrees. In other words... some of that trademark spring humidity will be in the air. Afternoon highs will climb into the lower 70s across E CNTRL MO under partly sunny skies and south-southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph. Again, an important ingredient in the overall setting will be the dew point temperature. The 65-degree dew point contour may surge as far north as St. Louis by late Saturday afternoon.

However, trouble will be brewing. The combination of upper-level energy, an approaching cold front and moderate instability will be lead to the development of organized T-Storms across CNTRL and SW MO late Saturday afternoon. Given the pronounced directional shear that will exist across MO... several of the T-Storms will generate rotating updrafts as they migrate into E CNTRL MO. Destructive hail will accompany some of these storms as the blitz across the St. Louis metropolitan area. Should the instability contribution become greater than currently analyzed... the tornado threat will also increase!

Pay close attention to the media, NOAA Weather Radio and/or Jon Kahlo's http://weathernotes.blogspot.com/ for updates on this severe weather threat.
